Course Description: This course will fulfill the mandatory, once in a lifetime requirement, to complete three hours of CME on best practices in prescribing Opioids and other Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS), preventing diversion of these medications, and providing insight into the diagnosis and treatment of addiction. The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy will require proof of this education for first time CDS prescribers and all those seeking licensure renewal by 2019.

Course Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Perform appropriate evaluation and specific assessments when considering opioids or other CDS in the treatment plan.
  2. Consider alternative modalities for the management of pain.
  3. Utilize the Louisiana Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.
  4. Detect pitfalls in prescribing CDS, detect drug diversion, & implement safeguards.
  5. Identify patients at risk for substance misuse or addiction.
  6. Refer those in need of treatment and be familiar with therapeutic options.

Susan Julius, MD, ABAM, ABFM, AAMRO, is a clinician, speaker, teacher, and researcher. She is board certified in family and addiction medicine, as well as physical therapy, and holds a special degree in urine drug testing analysis. She incorporates her background in these areas, along with her understanding of the biology of addiction and her personal journey in recovery to treat patients and families with this illness. Her pre-med schooling was completed at Case Western University, she continued her studies in physical therapy at Cleveland State University, & returned to CWRU for medical school. The rest of her training was at Tulane and Ochsner. She worked at a Methadone Clinic and was Medical Director for the City of New Orleans Homeless Clinic and Townsend Clinic, in Lake Charles. Currently, she is serving as a staff physician at Townsend Recovery Center New Orleans and as Medical Director of Townsend Clinic, in Baton Rouge, and The Positive Living Treatment Center, in New Orleans. Dr. Julius is an expert consultant and keynote speaker for American Addiction Centers and has been featured on Fox News, Baton Rouge Business Report, and New Orleans Happy Hour Podcast. She is active in Alcoholics Anonymous and is working with the New Orleans Re-entry Program. Her next goal is participating in a research study evaluating the Bridge Device for in patient opioid withdrawal treatment. She lives in New Orleans with her husband and three dogs, and loves to swim and garden.
