Wednesday, July 27 - Dr. Jacob Duke, "Ways to Make Implant and Restorative Dentistry Easier and More Profitable (From an Oral Surgeon's Perspective)"

JacobDuke webCourse Description: The course will focus on teaching attendees ways to make implant dentistry more profitable, enjoyable and pain-free for the doctor and patient alike. 

Course Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the pros and cons of different restorative techniques utilized in implant dentistry.
  • Recognize common errors leading to implant failure and how to avoid these costly mistakes.
  • Appreciate the time-saving advantages of new impression and scanning technology.
  • Understand cost-saving techniques, and when they can and cannot be utilized.
  • Know lab costs associated with different types/styles of dental implant restorations.


Dr. Jacob Duke received his undergraduate degree from Harding University and his dental degree from the University of Tennessee.  Upon completion of dental school, Dr. Duke entered the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.  While at Vanderbilt, Dr. Duke developed a love for all aspects of oral surgery and treatment of maxillofacial trauma/injuries. Dr. Duke is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Duke joined Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of Northeast Texas in 2009, and is active in community dental implant continuing education courses, which he provides to local restorative dentists. These meetings allow the restorative dentist and Dr. Duke's office to ensure the best outcomes for the patient. Dental implant technology has advanced rapidly, and Dr. Duke is committed to utilizing these techniques to improve patient comfort, satisfaction and esthetics. Dr. Duke averages placement of over 30 implants per month and utilizes two dental implant coordinators  to ensure seamless treatment of patients. In addition to local continuing education efforts, Dr. Duke is a lecturer at the annual Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Review Course in Nashville, TN.

 

Pompa webThursday, July 28 - Dr. Dan Pompa, "Top 10 List for the Drug Emergency Kit"

Course Description:
Today there are more medically compromised patients coming into our offices than ever before. As a result, a more detailed medical history and medical evaluation should be taken prior to beginning treatment. This will be a half day seminar on the essential drugs needed to make a medical emergency kit for an office. In addition, we will discuss four basic tests that can easily be performed to help in the physical diagnosis of a patients medical status. We will also discuss the “Conversational History” and how this can pick up many medical issues not revealed by the standard health history form. This can be performed by the dentist or staff and can prevent many potential medical emergencies from occurring.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

  • How to recognize and manage the most frequent life threatening emergencies.
  • Determine when and in what doses to administer the essential “Top 10” emergency drugs.
  • Utilize a systematic approach for each emergency scenario depicted on color-coded cards.
  • Implement three simple chair-side, non-invasive tests to help avoid an emergency. 
  • How to develop a plan for the office staff for dealing with a crisis event.


Friday, July 29 - Dr. Dan Pompa, "To Pull or Not to Pull"

Course Description:
This course will describe the indications and contraindications, for performing or referring a patient for Apical Surgery. With the correct history, radiographic and clinical evaluation, the decision to perform an Apicoectomy will be weighed against further evaluation, a retreatment option, or extraction. Then a decision is more accurately made as to whether an implant or Fixed Bridge (Fixed Partial Prosthesis), a Removable Prosthesis (Fixed or Transitional Temporary Prosthesis), or doing nothing would be the final treatment plan offered to the patient. The specific workup (checklist) is frequently overlooked, leading to a less than ideal outcome. This course discusses and reviews all options when a tooth is ailing or failing.

Course Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Know the radiographic technique to use when evaluating a tooth for fracture.
  • List the seven step workup consisting of procedures and tests that should be used when performing, or referring a patient for an Apicoectomy.
  • Understand the principles of GTM, and know the indications for the final prognosis.
  • Recognize that the location of a fistula is the key critical diagnostic indicator for the final prognosis.
  • Identify the signs to differentiate between endo/perio defect vs. perio/endo defect, and to understand the difference with respect to the prognosis.


Dr. Daniel Pompa, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a seminar series speaker and consultant for the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Pompa is also an on-line author for the ADA. He is a fellow in both the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the International Congress of Dental Implantologists. Dan has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, New York University College of Dentistry and the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally and has been published in such journals as the Journal of the American Dental Association, Dentistry Today and recently in the New York State Academy of General Dentistry Journal. Dan has practiced as an oral surgeon for over 30 years in New York and now spends his time presenting his lecture series. He is also an inventor, having been issued a U.S. Patent for his innovative work in dental implantology.

Saturday, July 30 - Richard Small, "Improving Patient Safety: An Analysis of Dental Risks and Liability"

Course Description: This course presents strategies to enhance quality care and patient safety by identifying potential malpractice issues and associated clinical risk management principles.  Topics including dental extractions and implants, failure to diagnose oral cancer and periodontal disease, opioid management, communication, documentation, the informed consent process, and HIPAA/HITECH regulations will be explored through a comprehensive analysis of dental claims.  This three hour lecture is designed for dentists and dental staff.  There are no prerequisites.

Course Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify common risk factors in implant, extraction, and failure to diagnose cases.
  • Understand how to implement key clinical risk management strategies to help mitigate associated risk factors, improve patient safety, and reduce untoward outcomes and malpractice claims.
  • Gain knowledge about opioid management, including considerations for prescribing and securing opioids in the dental practice.
  • Implement effective policies and procedures to help improve HIPAA/HITECH compliance in the dental practice.

 

Richard Small practices law in Michigan. He spent the first 20 years of his law practice defending dentists in court in Michigan and other states. He became an insurance agent for OMSNIC and Fortress in 2000. Small is currently the executive director and general counsel for the Michigan Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Great Lakes Society of Oral Surgeons. He also represents the Council of Michigan Dental Specialties and sits on the Michigan Dental Association Access-to-Care Study Group.

Both Westwinds and Luau are on the “beach side” of the resort. Westwinds is beach front. All rooms face the beach. Luau is not directly on the beach, but is very close and is set back a little from Westwinds. However, all LDA attendees staying in the Luau will have access to the private beach at the Westwinds.

- A minimum stay of 4 nights is required on Beachfront or Luau accommodations.
- Rates are good three days prior to the conference and three days after the conference dates.

Check-in time begins at 4 p.m. Check-out time is 11 a.m. Late check-out charges: check-out after 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. - one, half-day room rate, and check-out after 4 p.m. - a full day room rate.

All room rates include complimentary resort transportation; two bicycles per unit for up to four hours of usage daily; fitness center usage; one hour per day of tennis court time (based on availability); one hour per day usage on either a canoe, kayak or boogie board.

All rooms will be charged a daily resort fee in the amount of 12% of the pre-tax amount of the daily room rate. The resort fee covers items, including but not limited to, self-parking, Wi-Fi in the Baytowne and Linkside Conference Center, and reservation processing services. Complimentary Wi-Fi is offered in Westwinds. At Luau, there is a charge of $9.95 per day per computer. Resort charge is subject to taxes.)

All rates are subject to applicable state and local taxes and fees in effect at time of check-in (currently 12% for accommodations and 9.5% taxes and fees for all other services (fees for all other services is referencing the tax rate on purchases or services, such as beach chairs, drinks, t-shirts, etc.)

Reservations received after the reservation due date of Friday, June 24, 2016, for room nights in the room block will be accepted on a space-available basis at the applicable group room rate shown above.

Sandestin requires a one night's room deposit to be received within 10 days after a reservation is made, or it will be canceled. The required advance deposit for each reservation is refundable only if the reservation is canceled or arrival date is changed at least seven days prior to arrival date.
