Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
· List the current requirements and any updates to the current Louisiana Administrative Code and Dental Practice Act regarding the practice of moderate sedation.
· List the current recommendations and any updates to current sedation standards by the American Dental Association and American Society of Anesthesiology.
· Describe the principles of patient evaluation, case selection, and risk assessment for moderate sedation in adult dental patients.
· Discuss the pharmacology and proper administration of the drug(s) selected for administration, including newly available sedation medications.
· Discuss the precautions, indications, contraindications and adverse reactions associated with the drug(s) selected.
· Discuss the prevention, recognition and management of complications associated with moderate sedation.
· Describe a protocol for management of emergencies in the dental office and list and discuss the emergency drugs and equipment required for the prevention and management of emergency situations.
· Discuss principles of advanced cardiac life support or an appropriate dental sedation/anesthesia emergency course equivalent.
· Demonstrate the ability to diagnose and treat emergencies related to a deeper level of sedation than intended.

Dr. Brandon Key earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry and Spanish from the University of New Mexico, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He then earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from UT Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry. He graduated valedictorian of his class with a distinction in research. After dental school, Dr. Key completed a 3-year dental anesthesiology residency at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine and University Hospital. Dr. Key is a diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Key joined the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry’s Bernard and Gloria Pepper Katz Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2023. Since then, he has served on the anesthesia staff at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital and as a clinical faculty member at the school of dentistry. He provides sedation and anesthesia for pediatric and adult patients in both office and hospital settings. He is actively involved in clinical and didactic dental education, research, and organized dentistry. His research interests include pediatric sedation and anesthesia, perioperative medicine, patient safety, and post-surgical pain management. Dr. Key is originally from the beautiful state of New Mexico, but now happily calls Houston his home with his wife, who is also a devoted UTHealth doctor.

Refunds and Cancellation Requests
To receive a refund, all requests must be postmarked or sent no later than the day before each meeting begins. You may send your request to jeanne@ladental.org or fax to (225) 926-1886. Registration and course cancellation/refund requests must be in writing.

Cancellation Requests prior to Early Registration Deadline (see specific meetings for specific dates)

• Refund requests for registration will be granted a full refund, less a $15 processing fee. The request must be received on or before each meeting's early registration date.
• Exceptions will not apply.

Cancellation Requests between Early Registration Deadline and the day before your meeting begins

• Refund requests for registration fees will be granted a 50% refund less a $15 processing fee. The request must be received no later than 4 p.m. on the day before your meeting begins.
• Exceptions will not apply.

No cancellation requests or refund requests will be accepted or granted after the scheduled start to any meeting. This includes cancellations due to illness, late arrivals, weather, parking difficulties or any other reasons.
